Belgrade – Dva Jelena

This was my second time in Belgrade and it is winter time again. I think third visit should be during summer to be able to enjoy the city more.

I had chance to have dinner at “Dva Jelena” second time. This place is so local and it is almost impossible to find an available table on Fridays if you don’t have reservation. I suggest you to book your table online through their website before your visit.

There is also live music on Fridays. I keep telling “on Friday” because I have been there only on Fridays. I guarantee you to have a great night at “Dva Jelena” if you are looking for some local food and local music with local people.

We started with “Pohovane paprika sa sirom” – Fried cheese with tartar sauce. If you like cheese, it is a good match with your Serbian wine.

And we continue with “Prebranac” – beans with onion, garlic and sweet pepper baked in wooden stove. This was yummy and it reminded me a Turkish dish which is called “Kuru fasulye”. I am sure you will like it.

Another starter, “Tarator” – ccucumber with garlic yoghurt sauce. We can call it as Tzaziki. So there was nothing to make comment on it.

And finally, hero of the night – “Cevapi” J It is a must eat food when you are in Belgrade. We have ordered two portions and it was too big for four people. So it is better to share.

There were so many delicious foods as I spy on other tables.  I think it is best place to experience “local” life. Prices are reasonable. You can find all the menu details here.

And don’t go back to home without tasting Serbian wine.

Athens – Kuzina

I am starting my food experiences in Athens with Kuzina because it became my favourite and will never forget all the things I ate there.

The restaurant terrace has a lovely view of Akropolis. I think whoever goes to Athens must have a dinner or drink something with this amazing view. You need to make a reservation. We made our reservation before we went to Athens and we had a really nice table. There are time slots in this restaurant for the reservation and you need to have your dinner in 2 hours. Our reservation was from 19.30-21.45. We had a chance to see the sunset. I am not sure if this system is for terrace tables or all tables.

We chose “Zucchini balls” and “Grilled meat balls” as appetizers. “Zucchini balls” is so similar to “Mucver” in Turkish cuisine but these ones were juicier. I don’t have enough word to describe “Meat balls”. They are the most delicious meat balls in my life. I tried it in so many places. But this was something different. I could have eaten it every day during my Athens trip but I need to try something else. Portions are so big. “Meat balls” could be a main course because there are four pieces in one portion and it is enough for a person. We also ordered “Fresh green salad” with the appetizers. Portion was big as usual and they were generous in terms of the ingredients.

Main courses were “Risotto with pumpkin” and “Chicken fillet”. I normally don’t like risotto because most of the places have mushroom risotto or cheese risotto which I don’t prefer. In this restaurant, they do pumpkin risotto. I just took a spoon of it and feel in love with risotto. It is not overcooked, taste is amazing. If my first experience with risotto was this one, risotto would be my favourite food. Now, I have really high expectations for risotto when I go to a restaurant.

My only dissatisfaction was “Chicken fillet”. It was too dry for me and nothing special about the taste. This was the last food for me after all these amazing tastes may be that’s why I didn’t like it. But I suggest you to choose something different than “Chicken fillet”. There are many options.

We also ordered a bottle of wine. Total bills was 91 euros for two appetizers, one salad, two main courses and one bottle of wine. The restaurant is on the Michelin guide. This price is normal for a Michelin guide restaurant.

Doha – Al Sultan Brahim

Here you go is another Lebanese cuisine in Doha. “Al Sultan Brahim” is located at St Regis, a separate building just outside the hotel. This restaurant is a rare found place where you can eat mezze and drink arak together.

This is the second time for me in “Al Sultan Brahim” and it is a nice place for friend gathering. It is quiet and service is nice. In my first experience, there was a confusion about reservation and the seating area and it was a bit bad experience as a first impression in terms of service. But this time, staff was so helpful and kind.

We ordered “Fattouch Salad”, “Spicy Olives”, “Warak Inab”, “Hommos Beiruti”, “Spicy Patato”, “Breaded Calamari” and “Tripoli’s Harra”. And one bottle of Arak. All the mezzes were delicious and portions are big enough to share. They also bring hot and freshly baked pitas. “Hommos Beiruti” was a bit different than what I ate before in “Al Sufra”. I don’t know which version is correct. This version was served with tomatos. But both are delicious for me because I don’t feel like I am eating Hommos.

Arak is similar to Turkish raki. So there is a mezze and raki culture in Turkey, too. That’s why it is nice to find somewhere with the similar concept in Doha. So if you are looking for a place to experience Arak and mezzes together, you can visit “Al Sultan Brahim”.

*Just a small tip about this place. If you order a bottle of Arak and can’t finish the whole bottle, restaurant keeps it for a month under your name.

Zagreb – Boban

Some of you may familiar to “Boban”. The restaurant is owned by Croation footballer, Zvonimir Boban. Probably, football lovers will know him.

Boban restaurant is close to Nicole Tesle street. It is on Michelin Guide 2018. That’s how we discovered this restaurant.

There are both indoor and outdoor area. You need to make reservation for outdoor.

We had one “Bruschetta”, “Rustica”, “Tagliatelle con vitello” and wine. Bruschetta has one piece of bread but it is quite big. If you are two people, one portion will be enough as a starter.

Tagliatelle con vitello was amazing. It includes veal, sage and Grana Padano (Italian cheese). It is a hand-made pasta. Pasta is super thin and melting in your mouth. I am not a fan of pasta but I can be fan of this pasta.

Rustica includes beefsteak with roasted patato, rockets, red radicio and tomatoes. It is a huge portion. Beef was perfectly soft.

We have paid 287 kuna – approximately 40 euro. I highly recommend you to have dinner at Boban. Prices are affordable. It is one of the candidates in 2018 to get a Michelin Star. They deserve it. Try to go to Boban before they get the star. Prices may increase after they get the star. ☺️

Ljublijana – Sorbara Steak House

Sorbara Steak house is just beside the river and far from the noise of the touristic part.  They have tables outside to enjoy the weather. We found a table without reservation. But you can make reservation to be on the safe side.

There is a steak guide on their menu. It helps you to decide what to eat and how to eat.

They brought homemade butter for starter. I normally can’t eat butter because of its smell but this one was very light and I really liked it.

We ordered Australian rib eye 250gr and tenderloin 250gr. Roasted patato and mixed grill as side dishes. And red house wine for drinks.

On their steak guide, “well done” is not recommended because the steak is wasting the quality. That’s why I had the “medium well” (still not recommended but was the best I could do). I couldn’t eat the “medium well” it was bloody for me and asked them to make it “well done”. Although the meat is “well done”, it was so juicy and tasty.

Chefs really know how to cook meat. And the waiters were so kind. You can listen to waiters suggestions for your wine orders.

We paid 56 euros for two steaks, three glasses of red wine and two side dishes.
